Warwick Business School, The Shard

In 2015 Warwick Business School (WBS) opened its second UK campus within the tallest building in Europe, London’s Shard. Their aim was to echo the building’s intrepid design and construction, and in doing so position themselves as one of the world’s best business schools.

Gleeds provided project and cost management services on the project, which involved the conversion of the building’s 17th floor into teaching and office space.

The challenges of a great building

The location and characteristics of the building presented a challenging working space. The Shard is located in one of the busiest areas of London, so space and time constrains needed to be carefully addressed.

Delivering high standards

Gleeds began work on the project during its feasibility stage in March 2014. With the Shard campus set to be WBS’s most visible projection in the city, the team had to make sure the space stood out against the competition.

Gleeds’ hands on project management team delivered a first class service, managing up to £50m delivery stats whilst serving at the forefront of every aspect of the project. Gleeds led the development from the outset, acting as a bridge between client, contractor, and The Shard’s asset management team.

The new business school features:

  • 1,130m2 of space, with the character of a global headquarters
  • Two 100-seat lecture theatres
  • An IT centre
  • A reception and breakout area
  • 8 seminar rooms
  • A large meeting room

Designed by the award-winning architect Renzo Piano, the Shard is approximately 306 metres high.
