International property and construction consultancy, Gleeds has been advising on the development, providing cost management and employer’s agent services for the base build contract of WR Berkley Corporation Development Ltd’s £215 million venture, and for the Category B and Category A fit out of the building’s upper floors.

Robin Brodie Cooper, Director at Gleeds, comments:

"It is hugely rewarding to be marking the official completion of this spectacular building, which only serves to enhance London’s world renowned skyline. From the moment we were appointed we worked closely with the client to establish a comprehensive and detailed plan that would allow us to deliver this ambitious programme, and in doing so became a trusted partner, integral to the development team."

The finished commercial office tower now covers a total area of 600,000 sq. ft. over 42 storeys. It provides 35 floors of office space, a further three floors below ground housing cycle parking and amenities, and several retail units and restaurant at basement level. A new public plaza at the base of the building has already vastly improved the surrounding streetscape.

Awarded the first ever design stage certificate under the BREEAM UK new construction 2014 scheme, the development also incorporates photovoltaic solar panels to the roof, heat recovery on its air handling units, and energy efficient LED lighting throughout. WR Berkley Corporation, the American based insurance company who commissioned the build, will consolidate its London operation across five of the development’s mid-rise floors. The building has proved so attractive that a significant number of units have already been let to occupants.

Now complete, The Scalpel will provide essential high quality, sustainable accommodation for some of the City’s most renowned businesses. Robin BrodieCooper
